Addicted to Romance

PAUL FERRINI
Addicted to Romance

It is easy to get addicted to romance.
We all enjoy the emotional highs of being in love.

So, when one relationship ends
and we feel sad and low,
we immediately look for another relationship
to cheer us up.
...
Falling in love is truly like a drug.
It makes you very high for a short period of time,
but inevitably you crash.

Then, if you are an addict,
you go out and get another fix.

You find someone else to fall in love with
and lose yourself in each other.

You don't have to have much in common
to fall in love. When you are high,
it seems as if you could share anything
with your partner.

It's only when the drug wears off that you realize
that you and this other person
might not have much to share.

It can be disorienting and painful
to look at someone whose bed you have been sharing
and realize that you have very different values,
interests, and goals in life.

Everyone likes falling in love.
Who wouldn't like a hormone rush?

But very few people realize how dangerous it can be.
Indeed, very few couples survive falling in love.

The ones who do survive are the ones
who either took the time to get to know each other
before they fell in love
or the ones who were just plain lucky.
